Here's how to tell the difference before you spend a dime. One of the first conversations we have with homeowners at Adams Pool Solutions has nothing to do with tile colors, plaster finishes, or smart automation. It's more fundamental than that: should you remodel the pool you already have, or remove it entirely and build something new? It's a question that deserves a straight answer, not a sales pitch. Here's how we help our clients think through it. Why Most People Start by Wanting to Save the Pool It makes sense. Demolition is expensive. New construction is a major investment. And the instinct to keep what's already there is a natural one. But saving an older pool only pays off if that pool can actually become what you want your backyard to be. Otherwise, you're spending real money and still ending up with a space that doesn't feel right. We've seen it happen, and it's one of the most frustrating outcomes in this business—for us and for the homeowner. The Question That Changes Everything Before we talk about finishes or features, we ask every client the same thing: what frustrates you about your pool or backyard today? Sometimes homeowners can pinpoint it immediately: the pool blocks the view, the layout kills the usable yard space, or the shallow end faces the wrong direction for afternoon sun. Other times, it's more of a vague feeling that something is off. Either way, unless those underlying frustrations are identified, even a beautiful pool resurfacing job can miss the mark. This is a big reason why tens of thousands of pools are removed every year across the U.S. The pool itself often isn't the real problem. It's the layout, orientation, scale, or how the space functions as a whole. A remodel that doesn't address those root issues might look better on the surface, but it won't change how you actually feel when you walk out your back door. Inspiration Is Great—Just Don't Try to Use All of It at Once Many of our clients come in inspired by a resort they visited, a vacation rental, or a neighbor's backyard renovation. That kind of inspiration is valuable because it helps us understand your taste and what you're drawn to. But there's a balance worth respecting. Borrowing one strong design idea and executing it well is smart. Trying to cram every idea you've ever loved into a single backyard rarely produces a cohesive result. Good pool design is about clarity and restraint, not accumulation. The Real Deciding Factor: Is the Pool in the Right Place? This is where the remodel-or-rebuild question usually gets answered. Ask yourself a few things. Is the pool oriented correctly for sun exposure, views, and privacy? Does its shape complement the yard, or fight against it? Does the pool enhance your outdoor living area, or does it eat up all the usable space? If a pool is poorly positioned, facing the wrong direction, or fundamentally the wrong shape for the lot, no amount of new plaster, fire features, or water effects will fix... --- ### The $50,000 Mistake: Why Your Pool Contractor's License Actually Matters - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/expertise/why-your-pool-contractors-license-matters/ - **Published:** 2026-01-09 - **Modified:** 2026-02-09 - **Author:** Ray Langford **Categories:** Expertise **Excerpt:** Save $7,000 on your pool renovation today, pay $15,000 in repairs when that contractor stops answering his phone two years later—here's how to spot the ones who'll actually be around to fix their mistakes. You're getting quotes on a pool renovation. One contractor comes in at $45,000. Another at $52,000. Same scope of work. Similar timeline. The cheaper guy seems professional enough on the phone. So you save seven grand and go with the lower bid. Two years later, the plaster is cracking, the tile is falling off, and when you call the number, it goes straight to voicemail. Forever. That's not a worst-case scenario. That's Tuesday in the pool renovation business. The Cash Flow Tightrope Most Contractors Walk Here's what most homeowners don't see. Small pool contractors run on razor-thin margins. They use your deposit to finish someone else's pool. They use that person's deposit to pay suppliers for your materials. They use the next deposit to cover payroll. It works fine until it doesn't. One client pays late. A supplier demands COD after too many slow payments. Equipment breaks. Weather delays stack up. Suddenly they're choosing between finishing your pool properly or keeping the lights on. Most don't choose your pool. Why Even Good Contractors Disappear Not every contractor who vanishes is running a scam. Some are just bad at business. They know pools but don't understand cash flow, insurance costs, or what happens when three projects run over budget simultaneously. Others expand too fast. They take on more work than their crew can handle, hire subcontractors they've never worked with, and lose control of quality. When the complaints start rolling in, they realize they can't fix everything without going broke. So they stop answering the phone. The result for you is identical either way. You're holding a half-finished pool and a worthless warranty. The Three-Week Test Want to know if a contractor will still be around in five years? Ask yourself three questions about the first three weeks after you sign. Can you reach them on the first try, or does it take multiple calls? Do they show up when they say they will, or is there always a reason they're running late? Are they already asking for more money than the contract specified? Those patterns don't improve. They get worse. If communication is spotty during the honeymoon phase when they're trying to impress you, it'll be nonexistent when problems arise. Red Flags You Can't Ignore Before you sign with any pool contractor, watch for these warning signs: Any one of these might be explainable. Three or more means you're not looking at a contractor. You're looking at someone who won't be around to fix their mistakes. The Questions That Could Save You $50,000 Before signing anything, ask these specific questions and watch how they respond. "What happens if you're not in business in five years?" A company that plans to exist will talk about their history, their employees, their succession planning. A company living project-to-project will deflect or make it about price. "Can I visit a job you're currently working on?" Legitimate contractors have active pool construction jobs sites with employees in company shirts, driving company trucks, using professional equipment.... --- ### The Monterey Aquatic Therapy Center Transformation - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/expertise/monterey-aquatic-therapy-center-transformation/ - **Published:** 2025-11-09 - **Modified:** 2025-11-09 - **Author:** Ray Langford **Categories:** Case Studies **Excerpt:** How do you triple a therapy pool's capacity in 22 days when every missed session means a child loses progress toward walking? When Every Square Foot Matters The original therapy pool at Monterey Aquatic Therapy Center measured just 9 feet by 34.5 feet. Too small for wheelchairs to maneuver. Too cramped for parallel therapy sessions. Too limited for the growing waitlist of families seeking aquatic therapy. This Pacific Grove facility serves children and adults with varying disabilities—from autism to spinal cord injuries, from stroke recovery to developmental delays. When your pool is someone's path to walking again, "good enough" doesn't exist. The Challenge of Expanding an Active Therapy Pool [Image: ] Expanding a therapy pool sounds straightforward until you realize the existing facility couldn't close for months of construction. The therapy schedules. The insurance authorizations. The kids who'd lose progress without their weekly sessions. Adams Pool Solutions had 22 business days to triple the pool's functional space. We demolished one entire side of the existing structure, excavated new ground, and rebuilt from the foundation up. The original narrow entry steps that created bottlenecks during patient transfers? Gone. We constructed full-width steps spanning the entire shallow end, allowing therapists to work with multiple patients simultaneously. The new footprint—34.5 feet by 26.9 feet—might not sound massive, but it transforms what's possible in the water. [Image: ] Engineering for Vulnerability Therapy pools demand different engineering than competition or recreational facilities. The water temperature stays warmer (typically 88-92°F), creating unique chemical and filtration challenges. Wheelchair lifts and transfer boards require specific deck configurations. Rope anchors must support body weight harnesses without creating trip hazards. We installed an entirely new pump and filtration system sized for the expanded volume and increased bather load. The chemical system? Completely upgraded to maintain the precise water quality that immunocompromised patients require. Every light fixture was replaced with LED systems that eliminate shadows where therapists need to observe gait patterns underwater. The new coping and tile work included custom depth markers visible from seated positions—critical when therapists are guiding patients with limited mobility. [Image: ] The Timeline That Nobody Believed September 29 to November 3 was the target window. The center had arranged temporary facilities and rescheduled hundreds of appointments around these dates. We finished October 29. Five days early. That's five extra days of therapy. Five days of progress for patients. Five days of revenue for a nonprofit facility that operates on thin margins. The demolition phase, usually the most disruptive, was completed in 72 hours. Our crews worked in overlapping shifts: while one team removed the old plaster and tile, another began the excavation. As steel reinforcement went in on one end, plumbing modifications started on the other. What 'Community-Focused' Really Means During the project, we learned that one young patient with cerebral palsy had been counting down the days until the pool reopened. His mother told us the aquatic therapy was the only place he felt truly free from his wheelchair. That's the weight of responsibility in commercial therapy pool renovation. Another family drove 90 minutes each way for sessions because this was the only facility with therapists... --- ### Title 24: the “California Pool Heater Law” as of 2026 - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/expertise/california-title-24-and-pool-construction/ - **Published:** 2025-11-06 - **Modified:** 2026-02-11 - **Author:** Ray Langford **Categories:** Expertise **Excerpt:** Planning a pool for 2026? You're about to face higher costs and more complex requirements—unless you submit your permit by December 31, 2025. California's Building Energy Efficiency Standards are about to reshape how pools and spas get heated across the state. Starting January 1, 2026, Title 24, Part 6 introduces requirements that will shift the industry away from gas-fired heaters and toward renewable energy solutions like solar thermal systems and electric heat pumps. For homeowners planning new pool construction or major renovations, this means one thing: the December 31, 2025 deadline matters. Permit applications submitted before this date will be evaluated under the current standards. After that, you'll face more complex requirements, higher equipment costs, and potentially longer installation timelines. What's Actually Changing The 2025 Title 24 update aligns with California's broader push toward decarbonization and electrification. For the pool industry, this translates to strict new standards for heating equipment that effectively end gas-fired heaters as the primary heat source for new installations. Here's what the new regulations require: Five Ways to Comply Title 24 provides five distinct compliance pathways, offering some flexibility for builders and homeowners. Gas heaters aren't completely banned; they can still function as backup or supplemental heat sources if you meet one of these primary requirements first: What These Rules Don't Require The new Title 24 regulations include exemptions that clarify these changes are forward-looking, not retroactive. Why the December 31, 2025 Deadline Matters The most pressing consideration for anyone considering a new pool or major remodel is getting your permit application submitted before year's end. Applications submitted on or before December 31, 2025 will be evaluated under the current, less demanding standards. Projects permitted after January 1, 2026 will face: By submitting your permit application before the end of 2025, you lock in the current standards. This results in simpler specifications, faster approvals, and lower overall project costs. Planning Ahead for California Pool Projects For Bay Area homeowners and those throughout California, Nevada, and Utah where Adams Pool Solutions operates, the timeline for pool projects just got more time-sensitive. Our experience with permit processes across multiple jurisdictions shows that applications are already taking longer than they did a few years ago. In most Bay Area counties, permit approvals currently take at least one month after submittal for the first review, with another six weeks possible before the actual permit is issued. Clark County in Nevada is experiencing similar delays. These timelines mean that even if you're thinking about a 2026 project, starting the planning and permitting process now could save you from navigating the new Title 24 requirements. The new regulations reflect California's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting energy efficiency. For the pool industry, this represents a significant shift in how heating systems are designed and installed. While the environmental benefits are clear, the practical impact on project costs and complexity is real. If you're planning a new pool or considering a renovation that will add a heating system, the time to act is now. Getting your permit application submitted before December 31, 2025 gives you access to the current, more straightforward requirements. After that... --- ### Monterey Sports Park: Commercial Pool Renovation for a Community - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/expertise/monterey-sports-park-commercial-pool-renovation-for-a-community/ - **Published:** 2025-10-13 - **Modified:** 2025-10-13 - **Author:** Ray Langford **Categories:** Case Studies **Excerpt:** What happens when 600 families depend on pools that desperately need renovation? You rebuild two entire aquatic facilities in 49 days flat. From March to May 2025, Adams Pool Solutions transformed two aging aquatic facilities into competition-ready venues that serve thousands of athletes and families across the Central Coast. When the Monterey Sports Park needed to completely overhaul their aquatic facilities, they faced a challenge that would intimidate most contractors: renovate both their training and recreation pools simultaneously while maintaining strict competition standards and ADA compliance requirements. The project demanded precision at every turn. The Scale of Transformation The Training Pool alone spans 7,433 square feet with a 348-foot perimeter, diving from 3'6" to an impressive 12'6" depth. This isn't just a pool—it's where Olympic hopefuls perfect their strokes and high school teams chase state championships. The Recreation Pool serves a different but equally vital purpose: 1,500 square feet of accessible aquatic space ranging from 2'8" to 5'0" deep, designed for everyone from toddlers in swim lessons to seniors in water aerobics classes. Starting March 31, 2025, our crews began what would become a masterclass in commercial pool renovation. The Recreation Pool: Engineering Meets Accessibility The recreation pool presented unique structural challenges that went far beyond a typical resurface job. Our team completely removed and rebuilt an entire section of wall where the old ADA ramp existed, bringing it up to deck level with new steel reinforcement and shotcrete. This wasn't patching—it was reconstruction. The scope included replacing every piece of waterline tile, installing new depth markers, deck markers, and creating custom 24"x24" tile surrounds at floor returns. We tracked down and repaired a stubborn plumbing leak that had plagued the facility for months. But the real achievement? Installing a new ADA-compliant lift system positioned exactly 28 feet from the end wall with proper footings—ensuring every community member can enjoy the water safely. The Training Pool: Competition-Grade Precision Renovating a competition training swimming pool requires millimeter-perfect execution. One misplaced lane line, and you've compromised years of training data. We removed and replaced not just the standard waterline tile, but also the critical gutter caps that control water flow during high-intensity training. Every racing lane received new tile markers. Every target was positioned to exact specifications. The existing wall steps were completely rebuilt to current safety standards. We waterproofed the entire gutter system and surge pit—critical infrastructure that handles the wave action from dozens of swimmers training simultaneously. All lights were upgraded to modern LED systems, providing the consistent illumination required for underwater filming and late-night practice sessions. Beyond the Water Line What many contractors miss is that a pool renovation extends far beyond the water's edge. Our crews ground down the entire deck surface, then recoated and resealed it with materials specifically chosen for their slip resistance and durability under heavy foot traffic. This deck sees thousands of wet feet daily—it needs to perform flawlessly. We installed new main drain covers with custom tile surrounds in both pools, ensuring they meet current Virginia Graeme Baker safety standards while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the facility. / https://youtu.be/VFPUp_mHSCE?si=snSv_o3dAGuxrEaY The Final Push: 7 Weeks... --- ### The Hidden Costs of Choosing the Wrong Pool Contractor: A 70-Year Veteran's Guide - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/expertise/hidden-costs-of-choosing-the-wrong-pool-contractor/ - **Published:** 2025-09-27 - **Modified:** 2025-09-27 - **Author:** Ray Langford **Categories:** Expertise Every summer, thousands of homeowners discover their pool renovation has become a financial sinkhole deeper than the pool itself. The numbers are staggering: over $100 million in documented losses from pool contractor failures in just the past five years. Behind each statistic is a family who thought they were getting a bargain, only to pay double or triple the original quote in legal fees, repairs, and complete do-overs. After 70 years in the business, we've fixed enough botched renovations to recognize the warning signs from a mile away. Here are the five red flags that separate legitimate contractors from the ones who'll leave you with an expensive hole in your yard. 1. Unclear Estimates: One-line bids with hidden costs A Minnesota pool contractor quoted 14 families $75,000 each for their dream pools. Sounds reasonable, right? After collecting nearly $1 million in deposits, he spent $18,000 at casinos, $6,000 on a horse, and left customers with nothing but dangerous excavations in their backyards. The Attorney General secured a $2.2 million judgment against him. The victims? They recovered nothing. The contractor fled to Tennessee where he now faces federal wire fraud charges. The tell: Legitimate estimates break down every phase. You should see separate line items for excavation, steel, plumbing, electrical, gunite, tile, coping, plaster, equipment, and startup. Each item should specify materials, labor, and timeline. If your estimate fits on a napkin, you're not looking at a bid. You're looking at bait. 2. Limited Capability: Struggle with unique site or design challenges In Sarasota, a homeowner discovered why their 26-year-old pool kept losing water. The original contractor had mixed the gunite so poorly, it had the consistency of compressed sand. They could literally pull chunks off with their hands. The rusted rebar poked through like spaghetti. Professional assessment? Either $24,750 for a new inner shell or complete replacement at $45,000+. All because the original contractor didn't understand that gunite requires a minimum 4,000 PSI strength to maintain structural integrity. Meanwhile in Houston, an inexperienced crew knocked two 5-ton AC units off their concrete pads and bent three panels of the neighbor's fence. Their plumbing was installed so incorrectly that brand-new PVC elbows had to be cut out and replaced. When problems mounted, the contractor simply vanished. What capability looks like: Ask your contractor what PSI their gunite achieves and how they verify it. Ask about their surface preparation method. Companies serious about quality invest in proper equipment like hydroblasting systems that preserve your pool's substrate. If they can't answer technical questions immediately, they're learning on your dime. 3. Weak Portfolio: No verifiable track record of local success A Melbourne, Florida company displayed gorgeous website portfolios while collecting $50,000 deposits from 600 families. The reality? The owners were vacationing in Greece and the Maldives instead of building pools. Total losses exceeded tens of millions. Despite overwhelming evidence, criminal charges were mysteriously dropped. In Jacksonville, another contractor left nearly 100 customers with collective losses of $1.8 million. When victims finally won a judgment for $1.9 million, it was reduced to just $60,000. That's a... --- ### Why Your Pool Renovation Will Fail in 5 Years (Unless You Know This) - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/expertise/why-your-pool-renovation-will-fail-in-5-years-unless-you-know-this/ - **Published:** 2025-09-17 - **Modified:** 2026-02-21 - **Author:** Ray Langford **Categories:** Expertise The difference between a pool renovation that stands the test of time and one that fails prematurely often comes down to a single decision: how the old surface gets removed. While most homeowners focus on choosing the perfect pebble finish or tile design, the removal method used before any new surface goes on determines whether that beautiful new finish will actually last. The Hidden Cost of Traditional Jackhammer Removal Traditional mechanical removal, the industry standard for decades, involves crews with jackhammers chipping away at your pool’s old plaster. The process seems straightforward enough. Teams arrive with pneumatic equipment, protective gear, and determination to strip away years of worn surface material. But here’s what happens beneath the surface. Every strike of a jackhammer sends shock waves through your pool’s concrete shell. These vibrations create microscopic fractures, invisible to the naked eye but devastating to structural integrity. Think of it like repeatedly hitting a windshield with a hammer: even if the glass doesn’t shatter immediately, you’ve compromised its strength permanently. The real damage appears years later. Those hairline cracks expand. Water seeps behind the new surface. Delamination begins. What seemed like a money-saving choice becomes an expensive mistake when you’re resurfacing again in five to seven years instead of enjoying two decades of pristine pool surfaces. How 40,000 PSI Water Changes Everything Hydroblasting technology represents a fundamental shift in surface removal philosophy. Instead of mechanical force that transfers through your pool structure, water jetting uses 40,000 pounds per square inch of precisely directed water pressure to pulverize only the old surface material. The substrate remains untouched, unshaken, uncompromised. Adams Pool Solutions invested $500,000 in diesel-driven compressor equipment that generates this extraordinary water pressure. Why such a significant investment when traditional equipment costs a fraction of that amount? Because the physics of water jetting solves problems mechanical removal creates. Water pressure removes material through erosion rather than impact. The stream cuts through old plaster, paint, and deteriorated materials completely while leaving the structural concrete beneath intact. Engineering studies confirm that water jetting preserves substrate integrity at levels mechanical removal simply cannot match. Protecting Your Investment: The Structural Reality Your pool shell consists of steel-reinforced concrete or gunite, engineered to specific load-bearing specifications. When contractors use jackhammers, they risk removing substrate material along with the old surface. Even skilled operators occasionally chip too deep, weakening critical structural points. Consider what happens when too much substrate gets removed: Hydroblasting eliminates these risks entirely. The water stream stops naturally at the harder substrate layer, creating an ideal jagged surface texture that new plaster bonds to exceptionally well. No guesswork. No accidentally going too deep. No structural compromise. This preservation becomes especially critical in the Bay Area, where expansive soils already place unique stresses on pool structures. Maintaining full structural integrity isn’t optional; it’s essential for long-term stability. What This Means for Your Renovation Timeline Beyond structural benefits, hydroblasting transforms the renovation experience itself. Traditional jackhammer removal typically takes multiple days of constant pounding. The noise reaches levels that strain neighbor relations and... --- ### Taillight Warranties: What Happens If Your Swimming Pool Contractor Disappears? - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/expertise/taillight-warranties-what-happens-if-your-swimming-pool-contractor-disappears/ - **Published:** 2025-09-17 - **Modified:** 2025-09-17 - **Author:** Ray Langford **Categories:** Expertise “Some of these guys, you know, you get a taillight warranty. Once you can’t see their taillights anymore, you’re not going to see them anymore.” This swimming pool contractor was describing what happens to roughly 30% of pool renovation projects in the Bay Area. You’ve probably heard the stories. Your neighbor’s contractor who vanished mid-project with a $20,000 deposit. The HOA down the street stuck with a half-demolished pool and no recourse. The friend who’s been trying to get warranty work done for two years from a company that no longer answers its phone. Here’s what actually happens when a pool contractor disappears—and more importantly, how to spot the ones who will. The Cash Flow House of Cards Most homeowners don’t realize they’re financing other people’s pools. Smaller pool companies are often “…collecting a check from one job to pay for the other phase on another job they’re working on.” Your deposit doesn’t buy your materials. It finishes someone else’s project. Their deposit starts yours.  And when that musical chairs game stops—when one customer doesn’t pay or disputes the work—the whole system collapses. You’re left with a hole in your backyard and a contractor who’s stopped returning calls. The subcontractor problem makes it worse.  When your contractor vanishes, you might think you can just work directly with their tile guy or plaster crew. Most often, there’s a lot of finger-pointing between the subcontractor and the pool company that hired them. The subs haven’t been paid. They won’t finish your pool for free. And legally, your contract isn’t with them anyway. Why Pool Contractors Disappear (It’s Not Always Intentional) Companies without “the financial history and the wherewithal to handle any project” operate on the edge of disaster every day. One bad month, one disputed payment, one unexpected expense, and they’re gone. Adams has seen the aftermath firsthand. They’ve repaired hundreds of cracked pools—including their own from decades ago when the industry didn’t understand Bay Area’s expansive soil issues.  The Adams team recently fixed a pool at Pacific Union College with 166 feet of cracks that required complete structural repair. Another South Bay family came to them after their previous contractor’s work left “white splotches where plaster had flaked off” with no one to honor the warranty. These aren’t stories from the 1980s. This is happening right now. The Three-Week Test If a contractor can’t answer these three questions, their warranty isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on: If they dodge any of these questions, you’re not buying a warranty. You’re buying a promise from someone who might not exist next year. What a Real Warranty Looks Like Here’s what a quality swimming pool building and renovation company actually puts in writing: But warranties are only as good as the company backing them. Adams has been around since 1953. That’s 71 years of honoring warranties through recessions, construction booms, and industry consolidation. They employ 340+ people directly—not subcontractors—with 50 of them having worked there over 30 years.  Adams maintains California License #726779. Nevada License #47958. But over time, your needs evolve, your style changes, and your pool might not quite match your lifestyle anymore. Whether you’re looking to make your pool safer, more efficient, or simply more beautiful, there’s never been a better time to renovate your pool. At Adams Pool Solutions, we’ve helped thousands of California and Nevada homeowners and commercial property managers reimagine their swimming pools. From simple upgrades to complete remodels, we’ve seen firsthand the impact a thoughtfully renovated pool can make. Here are some of the most popular changes our customers request, and what to consider if you’re thinking about making them to your pool. 1. Shallowing Your Pool Why Make It Shallower? Many older pools were built with deep ends of 8 feet or more. While that used to be the standard, today’s pool owners are rethinking the deep end. A shallower pool offers: What’s Involved? Shallowing a pool involves breaking up the floor of the deep end and reshaping it with new gunite or shotcrete. Once it’s properly formed and structurally sound, we apply your new finish from PebbleTec® to plaster and give it a cohesive look. 2. Add or Remove a Spa Want to Add Luxury or Simplicity? A spa can transform your backyard into a resort-like retreat. Whether you want a cozy space to unwind on cool evenings or therapeutic hydrotherapy benefits, adding a spa to an existing pool is a high-value upgrade. On the other hand, some pool owners find their old spa goes unused and takes up valuable space. In that case, removing the spa can open up room for a Baja shelf, fire pit, or water feature. What’s Possible? We can seamlessly integrate a spa into your current pool layout elevated or flush, circular or square. We’ll also ensure its properly plumbed, heated, and designed with comfort and aesthetics in mind. 3. Reshape Your Pool Time for a Total Transformation? Sometimes, it’s not just one feature you want to change it’s the whole shape. Whether your pool feels dated, cramped, or awkwardly placed, reshaping your pool allows you to: How It Works This is one of the most involved remodel projects but it’s also the most dramatic. Our design team works with you to draft a new pool shape that matches your vision. From there, we demo parts of the shell, reshape it with new structural concrete, and refinish the entire interior and coping for a flawless finish. 4. Add a Baja Shelf (Sun Shelf) Perfect for Relaxation Also called a tanning ledge or sun shelf, a Baja shelf is a shallow, lounge-friendly area just a few inches deep. It’s the perfect spot for: We can customize the width, depth, and finish of your Baja shelf to match your pool’s layout and even add umbrella sleeves or bubblers for a spa-like experience. 5. Great! Just promise us one thing: don’t end up like these folks. Every year, we get calls from homeowners who tried to save a few bucks with a DIY fix or a “friend of a friend” contractor. The results? Let’s just say they made the kind of mistakes that end up in group chats… and not in a good way. Here are five real (and slightly painful) stories of pool remodeling gone wrong — plus how to avoid the same fate. 1. The DIY Paint Job That Stained the Dog The fail: A homeowner decided to repaint their tired-looking pool themselves using leftover interior house paint. After all, paint is paint… right? Nope. The paint immediately began bubbling and peeling, turning the water a cloudy blue-gray and leaving a weird residue on everything, including their golden retriever, who jumped in and came out looking like a Smurf. The fix: The pool had to be drained, sandblasted, and resurfaced professionally, costing twice what it would’ve cost to do it right the first time. Lesson learned: Don’t paint your pool. Ever. Let Adams Pool Solutions apply a premium finish like PebbleFina or WetEdge Quartz that’s designed to last. Learn more about our professional pool resurfacing services. 2. “My Cousin’s Handy…” The fail: One homeowner hired their cousin to redo the tile and coping. They used floor tile grout from the hardware store, didn’t prep the surface correctly, and poured concrete during a rainstorm “because it was their only day off.” Within a month, the grout was cracking, tiles were popping off, and the coping shifted. The fix: A full tear-out and rebuild of the tile line and coping. Lesson learned: Friends and family are great — just maybe not for structural work. At Adams Pool Solutions, we use only pool-grade materials and trained experts. Check out our tile and coping options. 3. The Shrunken Spa Surprise The fail: To save on costs, a homeowner told their builder to shrink the spa during a remodel. They got their wish — and ended up with a spa so tight, they couldn’t sit in it without kneeing their partner. The fix: They tore it out and rebuilt the spa… again. Lesson learned: Compromising comfort = compromising the whole point. Our design team ensures the right size, layout, and flow before we touch a single tile. See how we approach residential pool construction and design. 4. The Forgotten Drain The fail: One contractor resurfaced the pool but forgot to raise the main drain cover to match the new plaster height. It created a bowl-shaped dip where water didn’t circulate properly. The result? Algae growth, cloudy water, and weeks of frustration. The fix: Drain the pool (again), grind out the finish, raise the drain, and resurface the area. Lesson learned: What you can’t see still matters. Adams Pool Solutions handles resurfacing with precise elevation control and finish uniformity. See what makes our surface preparation process stand out. 5. The Glass Tile Tornado The fail: Inspired by Pinterest, a homeowner ordered flashy glass mosaic tiles online from overseas. The tiles arrived late, were too thin, and didn’t meet pool standards. They... --- ### Pacific Union College Pool Renovation: California Pool Renovation - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/expertise/pacific-union-college-california-pool-renovation/ - **Published:** 2024-09-10 - **Modified:** 2024-09-10 - **Author:** Ray Langford **Categories:** Case Studies **Excerpt:** What do you do when a 62-year-old pool starts leaking through 166 feet of cracks? Adams Pool Solutions turned this failing aquatic facility into a modern showcase in just one summer. Pacific Union College presented a significant challenge for Adams Pool Solutions: a complete pool renovation to address visible white splotches where plaster had flaked off, water leaking from floor cracks, and outdated pool ladders. Additionally, the client required upgrades to the pool structure to bring it up to code. Primary Requirements Design and Planning: Renovation and Repair: Enhancements and Upgrades: Challenges The pool had extensive cracks and leaks, leading to water loss, higher utility bills, and damage to the surrounding structure. These issues compromised the pool’s integrity, making the repairs urgent. Adams Pool Solutions quickly identified these as top priorities and set about repairing the structural damage using advanced engineering techniques. 166 feet of cracks were opened, and new rebar was drilled and epoxied into the floor of the pool, overlapping and tied for at least 24 inches. The leaking main drain from the original 1962 installation required complete replacement. A new main drain line was laid along the trench and up the pool wall to resolve the issue. Additionally, new steps were constructed to meet current regulatory codes. The Process The Adams Pool Touch With over 70 years of experience in pool renovation, Adams Pool Solutions was the perfect fit for this complex project. Our expertise allowed us to tackle the structural repairs while seamlessly integrating new features and ensuring compliance with modern codes. The project was overseen by an on-site project supervisor, ensuring quality workmanship and complete client satisfaction. They were searching for experienced Bay Area pool builders who could take their outdated backyard pool and turn it into a space they’d actually want to use again—for relaxing, entertaining, and making memories with family. They had a clear vision: a modern, low-maintenance pool that looked beautiful and functioned flawlessly. At Adams Pool Solutions, we’ve helped thousands of Bay Area homeowners bring their dream pools to life—and this project was no exception. Scope of Work: From Outdated to Outstanding We started by removing the old plaster and prepping the surface for a complete re-finish. The original tile and coping were replaced with clean, contemporary materials that better reflected the homeowners’ updated style. Safety and code compliance were a major priority. Our team split the main drains to meet modern safety standards and improve circulation, and we rebuilt the worn steps to enhance both function and appearance. The new equipment setup included: To top it off, we applied a Midnight Blue PebbleTec finish, giving the pool a deep, rich tone that not only looks elegant but feels smooth underfoot. The End Result? Adams Pool Solutions turned this complex challenge into a backyard masterpiece. Adams Pool Solutions faced a unique challenge with a client who wanted a complete pool refurbishment with new tile & coping, equipment and finish. In addition the client wanted to add a new built in spa, sun shelf and add an automatic pool cover. The primary requirements were: Design and Planning: Renovation and Repair: Enhancements and Upgrades: Challenges The pool itself was leaking and had several structural cracks that needed repair. A leaking swimming pool can lead to various problems, including water loss, increased utility bills, and potential damage to surrounding structures due to excess water. Additionally, pool leaks can compromise the pool’s structural integrity over time, leading to costly repairs if left unaddressed. Adams Pool Solutions knew straight away that this was a priority in the successful outcome for the project, and were able to repair the structural cracks using proper engineering protocols. The Process First, the old coping, tile and plaster finish were removed with state of the art hydro blasting equipment. Water Jetting, or Hydro-Blasting as it is sometimes called, is the future of surface preparation. Used by many industries to clean a variety of surfaces, the system uses a diesel driven compressor to create a 40,000 PSI stream of water that completely pulverizes the existing plaster surface. Independent engineering studies have concluded that Water Jetting is the best process to remove the surface material while preserving the integrity of substrate. The new spa and sun shelf were built using new steel, adding additional plumbing and bubbler jets, formed and shotcrete, as was the pool cover vault. Next was the installation of new tile, fun tile mosaics, coping, fittings, pool equipment followed by a new pebble pool finish. Lastly, the new automatic pool cover was fitted into place. The Adams Pool Touch With 70 years of pool remodel experience, Adams Pool Solutions was the obvious choice to handle a project of this size.  With our long history as a swimming pool remodeling contractor it has taught us a few things about pool construction. We’ve gone from simple re plasters to complete pool replacement and everything in between. Contact US Pool Design & Build Services Hillsborough’s Soil and Slope Challenges Most Hillsborough properties sit on hillside terrain with expansive clay soils that shift seasonally. This combination creates structural demands that flat-lot pool installation never encounters.Pools built into slopes experience differential movement—one end shifts while the other remains stable, creating stress fractures that worsen over time. Without proper geotechnical analysis and engineer-stamped structural designs, pool shells crack within 2-3 years of completion. We start every hillside project with soil analysis and structural engineering specific to your property’s slope angle and soil composition. This prevents the $80,000-$150,000 remediation projects we’re regularly called to rescue after inadequate initial construction.Drainage planning is equally critical. Hillside runoff must be redirected away from pool structures through precisely designed subsurface systems. Poor drainage saturates backfill around pool shells, accelerating soil movement and structural failure.  Any Questions? The Hillsborough Permitting Process Hillsborough’s permit requirements exceed most Bay Area communities. The town uses a two-stage approval process that catches unprepared contractors off guard.Design Review must be completed before you can submit for a Building Permit. The Design Review Board evaluates how your pool integrates with your home’s architecture and neighborhood character. This review typically takes 4-7 weeks and requires documentation that demonstrates aesthetic compliance with Hillsborough’s standards. After Design Review approval, Building Permit review examines structural engineering, electrical capacity, and code compliance. Complex hillside projects may trigger third-party structural peer review, adding additional timeline and cost.We manage the entire permitting process, from Design Review submittals through final inspections. Our experience with the Planning and Building Department means applications move through review efficiently rather than triggering revision cycles. Microclimate Variations Across Hillsborough Hillsborough’s topography creates distinct microclimates that affect pool performance and heating requirements.Properties west of El Camino Real experience heavier marine layer influence, with morning fog reducing effective sun hours.... --- ### Atherton - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/bay-area/atherton-california/ - **Published:** 2026-02-06 - **Modified:** 2026-02-12 - **Author:** Ray Langford Atherton Paradise Found – in Your Own Backyard! The company has worked in the San Ramon Valley for decades, and the team knows how local permitting, HOA architectural review processes, and site constraints shape what’s possible for your property. Most of the work here is residential: custom pool construction, backyard upgrades, equipment modernization, and resurfacing projects for pools built in the 1970s through 1990s that have reached the end of their original lifespan. The company also handles commercial and HOA projects where scheduling, compliance, and durability matter. Adams Pool Solutions coordinates the permitting process end-to-end. You’ll pay permit fees directly to the Town of Danville, but the team handles plan submission, reviews, approvals, and inspection coordination so you don’t have to track down every step.If you’re ready to talk specifics, request a consultation or call (925) 828-3100. Experienced Swimming Pool Contractors Serving Danville Families & Homeowners Adams Pool Solutions works with homeowners, property managers, and commercial clients throughout Danville and the surrounding area. Residential services include custom pool construction, remodeling projects that address equipment failures or outdated finishes, and resurfacing work for pools that need a fresh interior but don’t require structural changes. The company also serves HOA communities, multi-family properties, schools, and hotels where heavier use and compliance requirements come into play. Custom Pool Design, Water Features & Landscaping Integration Pool Renovation & Remodeling: Resurfacing, Tile, Coping, Spa Integration, Lighting & Equipment Upgrades Many pools in Danville were built between the 1970s and 1990s, and by now, a lot of them are showing their age. If your pool is losing water, has visible cracks, or the equipment keeps breaking down, you’re probably weighing whether to resurface or do a more complete renovation. The right answer depends on what’s happening under the surface.Resurfacing makes sense when the shell is solid, the plumbing and electrical are in good shape, and you just need a fresh interior finish. But if there are structural cracks, failing plumbing, outdated electrical, or sloppy prior repairs, resurfacing alone won’t fix the underlying problems. That’s where a full evaluation matters. The team inspects the shell, checks the plumbing and electrical systems, and assesses any past work so you can make an informed decision before you commit to finishes or equipment upgrades.Surface prep plays a big role in how long your new finish lasts. If the old material isn’t removed cleanly, or if there’s damage underneath that wasn’t addressed, the new surface won’t bond properly. Adams Pool Solutions handles that prep work carefully, whether it’s hydroblasting for resurfacing or structural repairs before new construction begins. Hydroblasting uses high-pressure water to strip away the old plaster or pebble finish without... --- ### Expertise - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/expertise/ - **Published:** 2026-01-22 - **Modified:** 2026-02-12 - **Author:** Ray Langford expertise Articles about our expertise in pools --- ### Commercial Pool Construction - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/services/commercial-pool-construction/ - **Published:** 2026-01-21 - **Modified:** 2026-02-11 - **Author:** Ray Langford Commercial Pool Construction Expertise. Preparation of the interior pool surface is critical to the long term adhesion of the new interior surface. Over the years, we have determined that removal of the surface material is the most effective process. This can be accomplished mechanically by using air-driven jackhammers or by using Water Jetting technology to blast away the existing surface. Water Jetting or Hydro-Blasting as it is sometimes called, is the future of surface preparation. Used by many industries to clean a variety of surfaces, the system uses a diesel driven compressor to create a 40,000 PSI stream of water that completely pulverizes the existing plaster surface.Independent engineering studies have concluded that Water Jetting is the best process to remove the surface material while preserving the integrity of substrate. HydroblastING The future of concrete surface preparation. This state-of-the-art process is revolutionizing the swimming pool renovation industry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=7nh4NQyRr5mjDkpb&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fadamspools.com%2F&source_ve_path=MTY0OTksMjg2NjQsMTY0NTA2&v=In50U22-M0k&feature=youtu.be Mechanical Removal The proven method for swimming pool surface preparation. Q. How long will it take to remodel my pool? A. That depends on the extent of the work. With simple preparation and resurfacing only, your pool can be back operational in ten days or less. Each additional step like masonry or plumbing, etc, will add more time. Once we start though, we make it a priority to complete your project in the shortest time possible. Q. Can the work be done in the wintertime? A. The simple answer is yes. Appropriate precautions are taken to prevent damage to the pool shell from hydrostatic pressure however most of our work is weather sensitive so you should anticipate weather related delays. Q. Do I need a permit for my project? A. Yes you do. All the counties in the Bay Area require a building permit for any type of swimming pool project even if it is a simple replaster. At the present time, most residential remodels in Las Vegas are done without a permit however that is likely to change in the future. Q. Do you handle it or do I have to get the permit? A. We will handle the application and procurement however you will be responsible for the cost of the permit itself. Q. How long does the permit process take? A. Each county is different, however, at the present time, they are all experiencing long delays in processing applications. Currently, most counties are taking at least one month after submittal before their first review and it can easily be another six weeks before they issue the permit. Clark county (Las Vegas) is currently experiencing similar delays. Q. Can Adams Pool Solutions handle my entire pool project? A. As the largest independent pool solutions company in the western United States, Adams Pool Solutions has the capability to handle just about every facet of the pool renovation or installation. With over 350 employees, a full service department, and a showroom that is a one-stop resource for the latest materials and construction techniques, we can handle your entire project, no matter how complex. Q. Is Adams Pool Solutions fully licensed and insured? A. We fulfill all licensing and insurance requirements for a construction business, including California and Nevada Contractor’s Licenses, Contractor’s Bond, Home Improvement Salesperson Licenses, Worker’s Compensation Insurance, General Liability Insurance, and Automobile Insurance. Q. What are the newest trends and additions I may want to consider? A. There are a number of new, exciting innovations in pool technologies – especially in automation, sanitation, and lighting as well as new interior surface and coping materials that are worth considering. Structural changes like adding a spa or an automatic pool cover are other possibilities. Contact one of our designers or visit our showroom to learn about the latest features and ideas trending now. From pool plaster’s unassuming yet enduring beginnings to state-of-the-art surface products like Pebble Plus ®, Pool Stone ® and Eco-Finish ®, Adams Pool Solutions has always been at the forefront, setting the trends for the industry with innovation and excellence. In addition, we feature well known products like Pebble Tec®, Pebble Sheen®, Pebble Fina®, Finest Finish® products including the Island Series, Micro Fusion, Radiant Fusion, Hydrazzo®, Fiberglass and of course standard Pool Plaster with different crews specializing in each product application. Fiberglass Colored Plaster White Plaster All TILE CHOOSING THE RIGHT SURFACE How do I know what material to install in my pool? What’s the best surface for my pool? How long will it last? How much does it cost? All good questions because the options can seem overwhelming. Each product has its own pros and cons and some products will be better suited to your specific application. Regardless of the material you choose, we cannot overstate the importance of balanced water chemistry to maintain the appearance and longevity of your interior pool finish. Consulting with professionals can provide valuable insights tailored to your unique situation, ensuring you make the right choice. Additionally, getting a few expert tips for pool renovations will enhance not only the aesthetics but also the functionality of your pool. Taking some time to research and weigh your options will lead to a more satisfying long-term investment in your backyard oasis. WHITE PLASTER The industry standard since swimming pools first came into existence has been white plaster. Plaster is smooth to the touch and gives the pool the clean, light blue color we have come to associate with swimming pools. It is the least expensive option and while it has a proven track record, it is the material most susceptible to the natural erosive action of water. Adams Pool Solutions White Plaster COLORED PLASTER The addition of pigment to white plaster provides a wide variety of color options to compliment any backyard design. The major drawback to colored plaster is that it accentuates the unevenness of the surface color and sometimes this effect can be dramatic right from the start. The color is rarely the exact shade anticipated and will fade over time. The industry has largely moved away from colored plaster. Adams Pool Solutions Colored Plaster, WetEdge EXPOSED AGGREGATE Pebble finishes have evolved over the past thirty years and now dominate the pool finish industry. Small water washed pebbles in multiple colors mixed with colored cement are applied and then exposed with water to give you an extremely durable natural looking finish that maintains color consistency throughout the life of the pool. The surface is very resistant to the erosive action of water and is practically impervious to the normal fluctuations in water... --- ### Pool Equipment - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/products/pool-equipment/ - **Published:** 2026-01-16 - **Modified:** 2026-02-11 - **Author:** Ray Langford POOL EQUIPMENT Water Clarity Starts Here Top Brands SWIMMING POOL PLUMBING & ELECTRICAL Almost twenty years ago, we saw the value in adding plumbing and electrical work to our services. Today our Plumbing and Electrical department functions as a full service, in-house specialty contractor. We feature Jandy Pool Equipment and offer complete or partial pool equipment replacement in addition to all aspects of pool plumbing and electrical work. Our crews bring decades of experience to every project from complicated, multi-pump commercial systems to simple backyard pool filters. POOL EQUIPMENT RENOVATION Like computers, the technology in pool water filtration efficiency seems to advance every year so any thoughts of remodeling your swimming pool should include a look at your existing filtration equipment. We can upgrade your entire system with new Jandy equipment or replace any single piece in your existing system. And don’t worry if you have another brand of equipment, we can upgrade individual components with your existing brand. Also, current energy saving codes mandate that all swimming pool pumps must be multi-speed. This means that if you remodel your pool and still have a single speed pump, you will have to upgrade to the multi-speed pump. And in the long run, this is a good thing because less energy consumption means more dollars in your pocket. Your designer can explain the various options in greater detail. --- ### Atherton, California - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/atherton-california/ - **Published:** 2026-01-08 - **Modified:** 2026-01-27 - **Author:** Ray Langford --- ### Start Up Instructions - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/startup-instructions/ - **Published:** 2026-01-08 - **Modified:** 2026-02-11 - **Author:** Ray Langford Start Up Instructions Just like first impressions, you only get one chance to start up your swimming pool correctly. OK, my pool is full of water, now what? Well, that depends… the surface you have selected and the make-up of the fill water in your area will determine how you approach the start-up. No matter which material you’ve chosen, it is vital that you understand the importance of a proper start-up procedure. To a large degree, it determines how your new surface will look and how long it will last.First things first – unless you’ve been asked not to do so, immediately start the pool equipment once the pool is full of water. Do not install the pool sweep at this time.I’ve heard the term “balancing the water,” what does this mean? In simplest of terms, balanced water means that the water is neither scale forming nor corrosive. How you achieve that balance is determined by the make-up of the water in your area.Without getting too technical, cement is the binder for most of our interior surface products. It is comprised of minerals and water contains varying amounts of minerals depending on the source – think hard water vs. soft water. The ultimate goal is to maintain an ongoing equilibrium between the water and the surface where the water is neither pulling minerals from the surface (soft and corrosive) nor depositing minerals onto the surface (hard and scale forming). This is accomplished by testing the pool water and then based on the results, carefully adding products that will lead to this balance.Fortunately, there are invaluable resources available that provide detailed instructions on what to add and when to add it and these can be found on the websites for each product. We encourage you to click on the appropriate link listed below. Or, you can hire a pool service professional who will be familiar with the water in your area and the new material in your pool.Whichever route you take, we are always just a phone call away and happy to provide whatever assistance we can FIBER GLASS PLASTER ALL TILE --- ### Bay Area - **URL:** https://adamspools.com/bay-area/ - **Published:** 2026-01-08 - **Modified:** 2026-02-21 - **Author:** Ray Langford Bay Area Pool Construction & Renovation Expert Bay Area Swimming Pool Builders Luxury Pool Designers At Adams Pool Solutions, we provide expert new pool construction services tailored to Bay Area clients seeking exceptional quality and design.
